EXPLORING STONE SETTING

(2 DAY WEEKEND WORKSHOP)

 

This is an intermediate class is designed to help students learn and go beyond the basics of stone setting. We will begin with techniques to set round, oval, and odd shaped cabochons, both with and without solder, then an easy prong setting for round and oval cabochons. Also covered will be how to create your own metal strip for custom bezels.  

 

Projects will include a ring and a pendant with other projects as time allows.  

 

Students will initially practice with stones supplied by the instructor, but may bring additional stones of their own. The materials fee will include a small amount of brass and copper, solder, and some fine silver bezel. Additional metals may be purchased from the instructor (see below).  

 

Depending on number of students, the instructor may have some stones available for purchase as well.  

 

NOTE: This class requires familiarity with soldering in addition to basic sawing and filing. This course will also involve the use of chemicals that may stain skin and clothing.

Level: Intermediate/ Basic metal skills - sawing filing, piercing and soldering.

Materials fee $20

Students should have the tools included in the basic toolkit from Intro to Metals, or bring the following: jeweler’s saw frame, saw blades, short nose tweezers, cross lock tweezers, jewelry pliers, dividers, and a ruler. You may rent a toolkit for $15 for the class. Please notify us if renting when registering. The instructor will provide some copper and brass, as well as a small amount of silver bezel, as part of the material fee. The instructor will also have curved burnishers and bezel rockers available for purchase as well as additional metals.  
Optional materials: cabachons over 8mm, 22 and 24 ga sterling sheet, additional bezel strip.
